Important oil portrait of James K. Polk by Tennessee artist George Dury. This work by Dury was copied after a portrait by George Healy just after Polk was elected president in 1844. Dury was one of the most famous 19th-century artists from Tennessee and painted portraits of Mrs. James K. Polk, Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson, and Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Dury’s portrait of Sarah Polk is in the White House collection. This portrait is one of the best portraits of President Polk ever offered.
