“Le Général Lafayette, Commandant en Chef des Gardes Nationales de France”
Épinal: Jean-Charles Pellerin - France, circa 1830 - Frame: 25 x 16¾ inches; sight: 22 x 13¾ inches

A hand-colored woodcut depicting Lafayette on horseback in uniform as commander of the National Guard, issued by the Pellerin workshop at Épinal. Rendered in the bold linear style characteristic of the Imagerie d’Épinal, the composition reflects the popular print tradition that translated contemporary political figures into widely accessible visual form.

Such prints formed part of a broadly disseminated visual culture in post-Revolutionary France, where Lafayette’s image remained an enduring symbol of revolutionary leadership and transatlantic ideals.

Exhibited: Bienvenue au Général Lafayette, The Cabildo, April 9, 2025 – January 18, 2026 (commemorating the 200th anniversary of Lafayette’s visit to Louisiana).

Condition: Very fine; minor tears to margin.
