“Vive la Liberté” Franco-American Patriotic Ribbon Fragment
French-American, circa 1830 — Length: 3 inches
A finely printed silk ribbon fragment bearing the inscription “Vive la Liberté,” centered within a radiant composition uniting American and French emblems. A wreath encloses a triangular device inscribed “La Patrie / La Loi / Le Droit,” flanked by the flags of the United States and France, with a crowing rooster above—an enduring symbol of French national identity. The dated cartouche, “Juil. 1830,” references the July Revolution, aligning the piece with the era’s transatlantic celebration of republican ideals and popular sovereignty.
Though modest in scale, the design is visually ambitious, combining allegorical and national imagery in a format intended for wear or ceremonial distribution. Surviving fragments such as this offer a compelling glimpse into nineteenth-century expressions of liberty and shared revolutionary memory.
