“Beauties of America — Capitol, Washington” Staffordshire Transferware Potato Bowl
John & William Ridgway (J. & W. Ridgway), Staffordshire, England, circa 1830s–1840s
Diameter: 12 inches; Height: 2¼ inches

A finely printed Staffordshire blue transferware bowl from the celebrated Beauties of America series produced by John & William Ridgway. The interior well displays an architectural view of the United States Capitol at Washington, rendered in rich cobalt transfer and framed by a floral border characteristic of early nineteenth-century Staffordshire wares. In the foreground, two mounted figures converse along the approach to the Capitol grounds, a picturesque element frequently employed in English transferware views to provide both scale and narrative animation.

Ridgway’s Beauties of America series formed part of a broader English fascination with American subjects during the early decades of the republic, when Staffordshire potteries produced tablewares decorated with views of prominent cities, monuments, and landscapes associated with the young nation. These wares were widely exported to the United States and proved especially popular with American consumers eager for imagery celebrating the architecture and symbols of the emerging nation.

The shallow form, often described in ceramic literature as a “potato bowl,” was intended for serving vegetables or side dishes at table and is among the most appealing formats encountered within the series.

Condition: Very fine.
