A Pair of Thomas Jefferson Battersea Enamel Tiebacks
England, circa 1801 - Diameter: 2 inches
A rare pair of Battersea enamel tiebacks depicting Thomas Jefferson. Political objects associated with Jefferson from the early Federal period are notably scarce, particularly in comparison with the more frequently encountered Washington examples. Produced in Battersea, England, where enamel portrait miniatures and commemorative objects were manufactured for both British and international markets, the present pair reflects the growing transatlantic interest in the leaders of the young American republic. Comparable Jefferson examples in Battersea enamel appear to be absent from major institutional collections.
Condition: Excellent with one minor tight hairline.
