Scrimshaw Whalebone Busk with Charleston Views
Circa 1840–1850.
Length: 14 inches
A finely carved whalebone busk decorated with a series of architectural and maritime scenes, including what appear to be views of Charleston, South Carolina, together with sailing vessels, a flag, and other patriotic motifs. The flag is believed to represent an early form of the South Carolina state flag. The long, narrow form was designed to be inserted into the center front of a woman’s corset, transforming an otherwise functional garment component into a highly personal object of carved and incised decoration.
The Charleston imagery and possible South Carolina flag give the busk an unusually specific regional character. Such whalebone busks were often carved by sailors during extended voyages and presented as personal keepsakes to family members or loved ones. This example combines maritime scrimshaw with distinctly South Carolina imagery, offering a rare glimpse into the personal objects and visual associations of the antebellum American South.
Condition: Very Fine.
