War of 1812 Naval Heroes Carved Cake Board
American, mahogany, circa 1820 - 11¾ x 12 x 1¾ inches
A finely carved mahogany cake board commemorating two of the most celebrated naval commanders of the War of 1812, Isaac Hull and Oliver Hazard Perry. Their initials, “H” and “P,” appear prominently above a central star, flanked by carved cornucopias and accompanied by a relief depiction of a sailing vessel, forming a sophisticated domestic tribute to American naval triumph.
Hull’s defeat of HMS Guerrière in 1812 and Perry’s victory on Lake Erie in 1813 became one of the defining naval achievements of the war, helping establish the reputation of the United States Navy and reinforcing the emergence of a more confident national identity in the postwar period.
Objects of this type translated public victory into the domestic interior, preserving patriotic memory in carved form. Surviving examples are scarce, and the present board stands among the strongest known expressions of the War of 1812 commemoration in American decorative arts.
Condition: Excellent; minor wear consistent with age and use.
