“God Bless the United States” Battersea Enamel Box
England, circa 1785 - 1¾ x 1⅜ x ⅞ inches
An exceptionally rare Battersea enamel box produced for the American market and bearing the patriotic inscription “God Bless the United States.” Battersea enamel boxes of the late eighteenth century were widely exported, often commemorating figures such as George Washington or themes associated with the American Revolution.
The present example is notable for the directness of its inscription, reflecting an early expression of national identity in the years following independence. Objects of this type illustrate the continuing commercial and cultural exchange between Britain and the newly formed United States during the post-Revolutionary period.
Condition: Excellent.
