Historical Patriotic Creamware Tankard
England, 1800–1820 — Height: 6 inches
An early Liverpool creamware tankard produced for the American market, transfer-printed with two Federal eagles flanking cannon above the slogan “Peace, Plenty and Independence.” The imagery reflects the patriotic language of the early republic, celebrating ideals of stability, prosperity, and national sovereignty in the decades following the American Revolution. Liverpool potteries were among the principal suppliers of ceramics to the United States during this period, frequently incorporating American political and patriotic motifs intended for export.
The tankard retains an early “make-do” repair to the handle, executed in the early nineteenth century to extend the useful life of the vessel. Such repairs are occasionally encountered on utilitarian wares and reflect the continued value placed on imported ceramics within American households of the period.
Condition: Very fine, with early handle repair, minor hairlines, and a small chip at the base.
