Liverpool Transferware Pitcher — “Apotheosis of Washington”
England, circa 1800 — Height: 10 inches

A Liverpool creamware pitcher transfer-printed with the celebrated “Apotheosis of Washington” scene, depicting George Washington ascending heavenward amid allegorical figures and patriotic emblems. Derived from late eighteenth-century engravings issued following Washington’s death in 1799, the design reflects the early republic’s elevation of the first president into a figure of national veneration and illustrates the rapid adoption of Washingtonian imagery within the Anglo-American ceramic trade.

The reverse displays a finely detailed American sailing vessel flying the early United States flag, while another panel bears a family inscription reading “Record — John and Sarah Smith” followed by the names of their children, indicating the pitcher was preserved as a domestic family register. While Liverpool potters produced large quantities of transfer-printed ceramics for the American market, examples bearing contemporary family records are rarely encountered, the addition transforming the vessel from a standard commemorative export piece into a distinctly personal object of early American household history.

Condition: Excellent.
