A rare hand-colored portrait of Marquis de Lafayette enclosed within a pewter rim. The finely engraved bust-length likeness is encircled by a wreath of laurel and floral ornament, with the inscription “WELCOME” above and “LA FAYETTE” below, commemorating his celebrated return to the United States in 1824–1825. The application of hand color, retaining notable vibrancy in the uniform and surrounding elements, lends unusual visual richness to an already scarce form.
 
Condition: Very fine, with light foxing; the mirror to the reverse remains clear and intact.
