Engraved by Elkanah Tisdale, after John Trumbull; published by James Hardie, circa 1801 — Frame: 8½ x 5¾ inches; sight: 6½ x 4 inches

An early American engraved portrait of Nathanael Greene, after the work of John Trumbull and issued in one of the first generation of national biographical publications. Prints of this type helped establish a visual record of Revolutionary leaders for a domestic audience in the years following independence.

Greene served as one of George Washington’s most capable generals during the American Revolutionary War and is closely associated with the Southern Campaign against British forces under Charles Cornwallis. His strategy of maneuver and attrition, including the campaign surrounding the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, played a significant role in weakening British forces prior to the final victory at Yorktown.
