Painted Tin Militia Liberty Cap Plate
American, circa 1810 - 12 x 7 inches

An exceptional painted tin militia plate formed in the distinctive outline of a liberty cap, decorated with a spread-wing American eagle bearing a polychrome shield above a panoply of arms. Boldly conceived and unusually graphic in presentation, the object combines martial and political symbolism in one of the most distinctive militia forms of the early republic.

The outline derives from the Phrygian cap, the potent emblem of liberty adopted during both the American and French Revolutions. Its use here transforms a functional element of militia equipment into an overt declaration of republican allegiance. Produced in the years surrounding the War of 1812, the form assumes particular significance as a visual assertion of independence at the moment the United States again confronted British power.

Examples of this quality and visual strength are scarce, and the present example stands among the most compelling intersections of military material culture, folk design, and early American political symbolism.

Condition: Very fine; expected wear consistent with age and use. No restoration.
