Grateful Dead / Oxford Circle — Avalon Ballroom Handbill (FD-33 “Logo”)
San Francisco, November 3–4, 1966 — 11 x 8½ inches — CGC 8.5 (Very Fine+)
An original first-printing handbill from the Family Dog series (FD-33), promoting performances by the Grateful Dead and Oxford Circle at the Avalon Ballroom. Designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, the composition is commonly referred to as the “Logo” design for its enlarged and highly legible presentation of the Family Dog emblem.
Issued during a formative moment in the San Francisco psychedelic scene, the handbill reflects the collaborative network of artists, promoters, and musicians centered around Chet Helms and the Family Dog. It follows closely on the heels of the earlier FD-26 “Skeleton & Roses,” marking a continuation of the visual and musical dialogue that defined the series.
The concerts took place shortly after Jerry Garcia’s work in Los Angeles with Jefferson Airplane during the recording of Surrealistic Pillow, situating the handbill within a broader moment of creative exchange among leading figures of the West Coast scene.
Condition: CGC graded 8.5 (Very Fine+).
