A distinctive barrel-form redware tankard incised “A Spirit of ’76” and further decorated with simple wavy line ornaments. Produced at the John Farmer Clark pottery in Concord, New Hampshire, the vessel reflects the long tradition of red earthenware production established by the Clark family, whose pottery operations helped sustain the region’s earthenware industry through the nineteenth century. Barrel shaped mugs and commemorative inscribed wares were among the forms produced at the Clark pottery during this period, often celebrating patriotic themes associated with the American Centennial. Covered in a rich dark glaze and boldly incised, the piece represents a striking example of late nineteenth-century New England patriotic material culture rendered in utilitarian pottery.
