“Bring All the GIs Home Now!” Anti–Vietnam War Protest Armband
Red felt armband with printed inscription Bring all the GIs HOME NOW! SMC
United States, circa late 1960s–early 1970sLength: 17 inches
A red felt protest armband issued during the height of the American anti–Vietnam War movement, boldly printed with the demand “Bring all the GIs Home Now!”—one of the most widely recognized slogans of the era’s peace demonstrations. The message reflects the growing national call for the immediate withdrawal of American forces from Southeast Asia as casualties mounted and public support for the war declined.
The initials SMC refer to the Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, one of the principal national organizations coordinating student-led opposition to the conflict. Founded in 1966 and closely allied with broader peace organizations, the Student Mobilization Committee played a central role in organizing mass demonstrations, campus protests, and national marches throughout the late 1960s. The group helped mobilize tens of thousands of students for landmark protests, including the nationwide demonstrations of April 1967 and subsequent rallies in Washington, D.C., and other major cities.
Armbands such as this were worn during demonstrations and marches as visible expressions of solidarity with the anti-war movement and its demand for the return of American servicemen. The vivid red felt and emphatic slogan create a striking visual statement, reflecting the urgency and emotional force of protest culture during the Vietnam era.
