An aquatint portrait of Commodore Stephen Decatur, shown in uniform within a laurel wreath and surmounted by the patriotic motto “Free Trade and Sailors Rights.” Issued in Philadelphia by John Kneass during the War of 1812, the print commemorates Decatur’s celebrated naval exploits, including the capture of HMS Macedonian and his earlier destruction of the frigate Philadelphia. The composition proved popular in the early nineteenth century and was adapted across media, notably appearing on Liverpool creamware.
