Fact Sheet on the House Committee on Un-American Activities, with Dennis v. United States Government Brief (Group)
New York: Progressive Citizens of America, 1947; Washington, D.C., 1950
A rare and politically charged group of early Cold War publications centered on opposition to the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) and the broader legal struggle over civil liberties in the United States. The first, Fact Sheet on the House Committee on Un-American Activities, issued by the Progressive Citizens of America in 1947, is a mimeographed pamphlet produced in direct response to the Hollywood hearings that gave rise to the blacklist. Written in urgent and polemical terms, it condemns the committee’s conduct as a violation of due process and the Bill of Rights, while outlining its activities, perceived alliances, and targets within the film industry. Scarce, and apparently unrecorded in OCLC, the pamphlet reflects contemporary resistance to HUAC at a critical moment in its expansion as a permanent congressional body.
Accompanied by the printed government brief in Eugene Dennis et al. v. United States (1950), including the folding “Organization Chart of Communist Party, USA,” the group places the HUAC controversy within the wider constitutional battle over free speech and national security. Decided in 1951, the case upheld convictions under the Smith Act and marked a defining moment in Cold War jurisprudence, testing the limits of First Amendment protections. Together, these works offer a concise and compelling documentary record of the tensions between civil liberties and anti-communist policy in mid-twentieth-century America.
