Horatio Gates — Revolutionary War Engraved Portrait
Paris, circa 1777–1783 — Frame: 9⅜ x 7⅛ inches; sight: 7¾ x 5½ inches
A finely engraved portrait of Horatio Gates, published in Paris by Esnauts and Rapilly and engraved by Desrais. The sitter is presented in profile within an oval surmounted by a ribbon bow, the composition rendered with crisp line work and subtle tonal gradation characteristic of late 18th-century French engraving. Issued during the American Revolution, the print reflects contemporary European interest in American military leadership.
Gates, a British-born officer who cast his lot with the Patriot cause, served as Adjutant General of the Continental Army and is closely associated with the Saratoga campaign, a decisive moment in securing French support. This Paris-printed likeness offers a scarce and elegant contemporary representation of one of the Revolution’s most prominent, if controversial, commanders.
Condition excellent.
