“Krishna Consciousness Comes West” Mantra-Rock Dance Handbill
San Francisco, 1967 — 8½ x 11 inches
An original first-printing handbill for the Mantra-Rock Dance, held at the Avalon Ballroom on January 29, 1967, as a benefit for the newly opened San Francisco Krishna Temple. The remarkable gathering brought together the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, Moby Grape, Allen Ginsberg, and Swami Bhaktivedanta in one of the defining events of the early San Francisco counterculture.
With its vivid Krishna imagery and striking psychedelic typography, the handbill captures the convergence of music, spirituality, and the emerging counterculture in Haight-Ashbury in early 1967. A particularly important piece of San Francisco music ephemera from the moment just before the Summer of Love.
