Marquis de Lafayette — French Revolution Engraved Portrait
Paris, 1790 - Frame: 10½ x 9½ inches; sight: 8½ x 7½ inches
A finely composed engraved portrait of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, after a design by Jean Duplessis-Bertauxand engraved by Charles François Gabriel Levachez. The bust-length profile is set within a circular reserve above a detailed vignette scene, the composition combining refined line engraving with tonal richness characteristic of late 18th-century French printmaking. The engraved caption identifies Lafayette in his dual role as deputy to the Estates-General of 1789 and commander of the Parisian National Guard.
Issued at the outset of the French Revolution, the print reflects Lafayette’s unique transatlantic stature as both an American Revolutionary hero and a central figure in early revolutionary France. Variants of the print are recorded, and the present example, with its distinctive format, may represent a particular state or trimmed issue. A compelling and historically resonant image of one of the era’s most celebrated figures.
Condition excellent.
