“Nataniel Greene, Major General in the American Armies, a Patriot, a Hero, and a Friend” — Allegorical Stipple-Engraved Portrait
Paris, circa 1786 — Frame: 17 x 15 inches; sight: 11 x 7¼ inches
Allegorical stipple-engraved portrait of Nathanael Greene, presented within an oval medallion supported by classical figures emblematic of wisdom and martial virtue, with a putto below and military trophies in the foreground. The composition follows a European allegorical convention, elevating Greene within the established visual language of heroic history imagery.
Issued in Paris after a likeness by Charles Willson Peale and engraved by Justus Chevillet, the print reflects the strong interest in American military leaders abroad during the Revolutionary era. Greene, a principal general of the Continental Army and a trusted subordinate of George Washington, was widely regarded for his role in the southern campaign and contribution to the American victory.
Condition: Very fine; hand-coloring likely added at a later date; not examined out of frame; in a later frame.
