Philip alias Metacomet of Pokanoket — Engraved Portrait
Early to mid-19th century (after earlier sources) — Frame: 7½ x 5¼ inches; sight: 6 x 3⅝ inches
A finely engraved portrait of Metacomet, also known as King Philip, the Wampanoag sachem whose leadership during King Philip’s War (1675–1676) marked one of the most consequential conflicts of early colonial New England. Depicted standing in ceremonial dress with staff in hand, the composition reflects a later European interpretation of Indigenous leadership, derived from earlier colonial sources and disseminated through printed histories of the conflict. The engraved caption below identifies the sitter as “Philip alias Metacomet of Pokanoket,” reinforcing the print’s historical framing.
Condition: Very fine, with light foxing.
