Samuel Huntington — President of the Continental Congress
After Pierre Eugène du Simitière
Published by R. Wilkinson, No. 58 Cornhill, London, 15 May 1783
Frame: 7½ x 6⅜ inches; sight: 6 x 4¾ inches

A stipple-engraved portrait of Samuel Huntington, identified in the caption as “His Excellency S. Huntington President of Congress.” Published in London by R. Wilkinson on 15 May 1783, the engraving follows a likeness associated with Pierre Eugène du Simitière, the Swiss-born artist and collector active in Revolutionary-era Philadelphia.

Huntington, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, served as President of the Continental Congress from 1779 to 1781, presiding during the adoption of the Articles of Confederation and the closing years of the American Revolutionary War. Contemporary likenesses of Huntington are notably scarce, making engravings of this type among the few period images through which his appearance became known. He later returned to Connecticut, serving as Governor from 1786 until his death.

Condition: Excellent.
