Alexander Calder “New Mobilization” Pinback Button
1969Diameter: 1¾ inches
Designed by Alexander Calder for the New Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, this pinback was issued for the November 15, 1969, mass protest in Washington, D.C. Calder’s distinctive graphic treatment transforms the button into an unusually direct intersection of modern art and political protest.
A particularly important example of protest ephemera, the button demonstrates how established artists contributed their visual language to the antiwar movement, bringing Calder’s instantly recognizable aesthetic into the political culture of the period.
Condition: Excellent.
