An iconic NASA photograph showing the American flag standing on the lunar surface during Apollo 17, with the Earth visible in the distant blackness above the horizon. Taken in December 1972, during humanity’s final Apollo lunar landing, the image captures one of the most enduring visual symbols of the American space program and the culmination of the nation’s effort to place astronauts on the Moon.
 
Commanded by Eugene Cernan, with Harrison Schmitt and Ronald Evans, the mission marked the sixth successful lunar landing and remains the last occasion on which humans have walked on the Moon. Official NASA photographs such as this were produced for distribution through government and educational channels and have since become defining visual documents of the Space Age.
