An engraved invitation issued by the Corporation of the City of New York for civic celebrations marking the completion of the Erie Canal. The design features an allegorical vignette beneath the heading “The Corporation of the City of New York,” while the printed text directs participants to assemble at City Hall and proceed by steamboat to Sandy Hook.
 
Completed in 1825, the Erie Canal transformed American commerce and firmly established New York as the nation’s leading commercial center. Ephemera relating to the official celebrations remain scarce survivals of this landmark achievement in early American history.
