General Winfield Scott “Victor at Vera Cruz” Stogie Case

A decorated papier-mâché stogie case featuring an equestrian portrait of General Winfield Scott, inscribed “Genl. Scott Victor at Vera Cruz,” commemorating his celebrated command in the Mexican-American War. Shown in full military dress and mounted in triumph, Scott is presented in a heroic martial pose recalling his successful 1847 Veracruz campaign, the decisive opening engagement in the American advance toward Mexico City.
 
Both commemorative and utilitarian, the case reflects the popular celebration of military figures in mid-nineteenth-century America, when recent martial victories were translated into decorative objects for everyday use. Retaining its original inner sleeve, the present example is notably well preserved.
