George Washington Profile Portrait
After Joseph Wright; engraved by Ruotte after F. Bonneville, Paris, 1796–1798
Stipple engraving
Plate: 6 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches; frame: 15 x 12 inches
A scarce French stipple engraving of George Washington engraved by Ruotte after a drawing by F. Bonneville, itself derived from Joseph Wright's celebrated profile portrait executed circa 1790. Published in Paris, rue St. Jacques No. 195, the engraving depicts Washington in left profile beneath the French inscription, "Né en Virginie année 1733. Commandant en Chef des Armées et Président du Congrès d'Amérique." Issued during the final years of Washington's presidency, it reflects the enduring admiration for the American statesman in post-Revolutionary France. Recorded in both Hart (Engraved Portraits of Washington, No. 172b) and Baker (No. 69).
Condition: Good condition with light, even age toning. Professionally matted and housed in a later carved and ebonized frame with gilt liner. A well-preserved impression.
