Grateful Dead and Country Joe & the Fish — “Danse Macabre” Berkeley Concert Handbill
Pauley Ballroom, University of California, Berkeley — December 2, 1966
6⅞ x 10½ inches

An original concert handbill advertising a performance by the Grateful Dead and Country Joe & the Fish at Pauley Ballroom on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, presented on Friday evening, December 2, 1966. The flyer features striking psychedelic artwork by Ruth Garbell, incorporating vivid magenta and green coloration and a distinctive devilish motif that reflects the experimental graphic style emerging within the San Francisco counterculture during the mid-1960s.

Concerts at university venues such as Pauley Ballroom played an important role in the early development of the San Francisco psychedelic music scene, bringing together many of the musicians who would soon achieve national prominence. Handbills produced for these events remain among the most evocative visual artifacts documenting the formative years of West Coast rock culture.

Condition: Excellent, with a few small spots of light brown staining to the verso.
