Independent Student Club Revolutionary Portrait Button Collection
1968 - 1 ¾ inches each
A striking series of political buttons produced by the Independent Student Club and designed by Lisa Lyons, featuring stylized portraits of figures associated with socialism, labor, Black liberation, and revolutionary politics. The series includes Karl Liebknecht, James Connolly, Malcolm X, V.I. Lenin, Big Bill Haywood, Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, John Brown, Emiliano Zapata, Samuel Adams, Thomas Paine, Rosa Luxemburg, Joe Hill, Jean-Paul Marat, Frederick Douglass, Leon Trotsky, Eugene Debs, William Morris, and Karl Marx. Each button pairs its portrait with a concise slogan reflecting the political language of the late 1960s.
Produced in several fluorescent, day-glo color combinations, collections of these buttons are rarely offered with the entire group presented in a single color. This exceptionally cohesive group, all in the same vivid orange, provides an unusual representation of Lyons’s bold graphic design and the radical student political culture of the period.
Condition: Excellent.
