International Socialists Revolutionary Portrait Button Collection
1968 - Designed by Lisa Lyons
1¾ inches
A striking collection of 18 political buttons featuring portraits of historical figures associated with socialism, labor, revolution, and Black liberation, including Sam Adams, John Brown, Karl Liebknecht, Rosa Luxemburg, Friedrich Engels, Malcolm X, Leon Trotsky, James Connolly, Eugene Debs, Tom Paine, Emiliano Zapata, Big Bill Haywood, V.I. Lenin, William Morris, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, and Jean-Paul Marat. Each button combines a boldly rendered portrait with a concise political slogan, reflecting the graphic language and radical political culture of the late 1960s. The buttons were produced in several Day-Glo color variations; this collection is notable for bringing together 18 examples in the same fluorescent red color, an uncommon offering for a group typically encountered in mixed colors. The present group represents a substantial selection from the series.
