Engraved map of the Chesapeake region depicting portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia, issued in connection with the celebrated Mason–Dixon survey. The cartouche reads: “A Map of that Part of America where a Degree of Latitude was measured for the Royal Society by Cha. Mason & Jer. Dixon.”
 
Conducted between 1763 and 1767, the survey resolved a long-standing boundary dispute between the colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland and established one of the most famous dividing lines in American history. The Mason–Dixon Line would later take on broader symbolic meaning as a cultural and political boundary in the United States.
