William Henry Drayton — Revolutionary War Engraved Portrait
Paris, 1781 — Frame: 9 x 7⅛ inches; sight: 7⅜ x 5½ inches
A refined engraved profile portrait of William Henry Drayton, drawn from life by Pierre Eugène du Simitière and engraved in Paris by B. L. Prévost. Issued during the Revolutionary era, the composition reflects the elegant restraint of late 18th-century French printmaking, with crisp line work and balanced tonal modeling. The lower margin retains its engraved credit line and manuscript identification, and the sheet survives with full margins. A scarce contemporary likeness of an early South Carolina patriot and member of the Continental Congress.
Condition: Excellent.
