This primary is regarded as the most significant in West Virginia's history. John F. Kennedy overcame a 20-point deficit in early April polls to defeat Hubert Humphrey, leading to Humphrey's withdrawal from the race. Kennedy subsequently triumphed over Nixon in the general election, attributing his success to the support of West Virginia voters. In June 1963, he acknowledged, "I Would Not Be Where I Now Am, I Would Not Have Some Of The Responsibilities Which I Now Bear, If It Had Not Been For The People Of West Virginia."
