Born in Rhode Island in 1718, he hailed from a family with deep maritime roots and quickly advanced due to his naval expertise and leadership acumen. In 1775, the Continental Congress appointed him to head the fledgling naval forces, underscoring his esteemed reputation.
During his command, Hopkins led the first naval expedition of the war, successfully capturing the British fort on New Providence Island in the Bahamas. This victory secured essential supplies for the Continental forces and represented a pivotal early triumph for the young navy.
Despite initial successes, Hopkins encountered obstacles such as limited resources and political strife within the Continental Congress.
