July Revolution Medallion Sulphide Paperweight
Cristallerie de Clichy, Clichy — circa 1830 (sulphide dated later production 1845–1855)
Diameter: 1⅞ inches; Height: 1½ inches
A Clichy sulphide paperweight centered with a molded medallion commemorating the July Revolution. The device depicts the July Column in Paris, accompanied by the inscription “JUILLET 1830,” with the surrounding legend “AUX HÉROS MORTS EN DÉFENDANT LES LOIS,” honoring those who fell during the uprising.
Set against a translucent blue ground, the white sulphide insert is crisply defined, exemplifying the technical refinement associated with mid-19th-century French glassmaking. The polished pontil further reflects Clichy’s high production standards during this period.
Such commemorative sulphides translate contemporary political events into decorative objects, preserving historical memory within finely executed glasswork.
Condition: Near excellent, with a small bruise to the edge and light surface wear.
