George Washington (1732–1799)
Medium: Mezzotint
Location: London
Date: Circa 1775
Dimensions:
Sight: 13 ½" x 9 ¾"
Frame: 20" x 16"
This is an early engraving of George Washington, created by artist Alexander Campbell. The piece is titled "George Washington, Esqr. General and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, in America," and was published in London by C. Shepherd in September 1775. Despite a few stray marks, the mezzotint on paper remains an excellent example of early American portraiture.
Historical Note: This print is among the earliest depictions of Washington. In a remark made to his wife upon seeing the print, Washington noted, "Mr. Campbell whom I never saw (to my knowledge) has made a very formidable figure of the Commander in Chief giving him a sufficient portion of Terror in his Countenance."
