General Jackson “The Hero of New Orleans” Strawberry Lustreware Plate
Circa 1824–1828 — Diameter: 8¾ inches
A strawberry lustreware plate commemorating Andrew Jackson and his victory at the Battle of New Orleans, the engagement that secured his national reputation in the aftermath of the War of 1812. The central transfer depicts Jackson in military dress above the inscription “The Hero of New Orleans.”
Finished in a characteristic pink lustre glaze, the plate reflects a decorative technique popular in early nineteenth-century ceramics. Wares of this type were produced for the American market, where Jackson’s military reputation circulated widely in the years preceding his presidency.
