George Washington Mezzotint Portrait

London, circa 1775 - Frame: 20 x 16 inches; sight: 13½ x 9¾ inches

An early mezzotint portrait of George Washington, engraved by Alexander Campbell and published in London by C. Shepherd in September 1775. Titled “George Washington, Esqr. General and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, in America,” the print ranks among the earliest European representations of Washington issued at the outset of the American Revolution.

Washington himself is said to have remarked upon seeing the likeness that the artist had rendered him with “a sufficient portion of Terror in his Countenance,” reflecting both the immediacy and interpretive character of early wartime portraiture.

Condition: Excellent.
