“His Excellency Gen. George Washington” Liverpool Creamware Tankard

A rare Liverpool creamware tankard transfer-printed with a portrait of George Washington beneath the banner “His Excellency,” a title associated with his role as Commander-in-Chief at the close of the American Revolution. Produced for the American market, such wares reflect the early transatlantic demand for Washington imagery in the years following independence.
 
The present example represents a distinctive Washington image within the corpus of Anglo-American ceramics and is illustrated in David Arman, Anglo-American Ceramics (W.4), where it serves as the plate example.
 
Condition: Very good, unrestored; rim chips, hairline crack at rim, and minor loss or roughness near the upper handle.
