An extremely rare plaster portrait plaque depicting President James Madison in profile, the molded bust framed within a recessed tablet and accompanied by his name impressed vertically along either side. Modest in scale yet visually refined, the plaque reflects the neoclassical taste that shaped early American commemorative design in the decades surrounding Madison’s presidency.
 
Decorative objects relating to Madison are notably scarce, particularly when compared with the extensive commemorative material produced for George Washington. Issued during the era of the War of 1812 and its aftermath, the plaque reflects Madison’s enduring association with the defense of American sovereignty and the emergence of a more confident national identity.
