Revolutionary War Naval Hand Grenade
American, circa 1775–1783 - Diameter: approximately 3 inches; weight: approximately 2.25 lbs

 

Cast-iron naval hand grenade formed as a hollow sphere in a two-part sand mold, retaining a pronounced mold seam and vestiges of the sprue with a fuse aperture measuring approximately ⅜ inch in diameter. Intended to be filled with gunpowder and ignited prior to use, such grenades were employed in close-quarters naval engagements during the Revolutionary War.
