Revolutionary War Period Burl Wood Canteen

An exceptionally rare wooden canteen constructed in part from burl wood. Canteens from the Revolutionary era are themselves scarce, and examples incorporating burl are particularly unusual, with only a small number recorded. One face and the sides are fashioned from richly figured burl, while the opposite face is of typical pine construction, reflecting the practical use of available materials by colonial craftsmen.
 
Remaining in untouched condition, the canteen represents an important example of Revolutionary-era material culture, an everyday object associated with the lived experience of soldiers and civilians during the struggle for American independence. Reportedly found in the New Hampshire–Maine border region, it carries a strong regional association with late eighteenth-century New England.
