A pair of brightly colored anti-LBJ protest buttons bearing the slogan “There’s a Better Way Then LBJ” surrounding a large peace symbol. Produced during the increasingly divisive years of the Vietnam War, the buttons reflect growing opposition to President Lyndon B. Johnson’s policies and the expansion of American involvement in Vietnam. The incorrect use of “Then” for “Than” is a notable and characteristic detail, giving the buttons an informal, grassroots quality.
 
Political buttons such as these were an important form of inexpensive, highly visible expression during the 1960s, worn at demonstrations, on college campuses, and in everyday life.
