A Wedgwood black basalt intaglio seal depicting a right-facing profile of Thomas Paine with the inscription “MY COUNTRY !!!” above. The reverse is impressed “WEDGWOOD,” identifying production by the celebrated English manufactory.

 

Paine emerged as one of the most influential political writers of the Revolutionary era. His pamphlet Common Sense, published in Philadelphia in 1776, powerfully argued for American independence and helped shape public opinion during the critical months leading to the Declaration of Independence. Objects of this type reflect the widespread recognition of Paine as a leading voice of the revolutionary cause and an enduring symbol of the political ideas that helped transform Britain’s American colonies into an independent nation.
