Washington and Lafayette Historical Staffordshire Pitcher

A finely modeled blue jasper historical Staffordshire pitcher commemorating Lafayette’s celebrated return to America, molded in white relief against a deep cobalt ground. One side bears a bust portrait of Washington inscribed “His Country’s Father,” the reverse with Lafayette inscribed “The Nation’s Guest,” while the third reserve beneath the spout is centered with a spread-wing federal eagle beneath a starry arch. A grapevine border encircles the collar, completing one of the most visually striking commemorative ceramic forms produced for Lafayette’s American tour.
