William Henry Harrison Large Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug

A large and highly ovoid salt-glazed stoneware jug with semi-squared spout, boldly inscribed “Harrison” in cobalt slip beneath the impressed maker’s mark, “E. S. Fox Athens 2,” also highlighted in cobalt. Produced at the Athens, New York pottery of E. S. Fox, active 1838–1843, the form is notable for its pronounced swelling body and strong visual presence.
 
Jugs of this type are closely associated with the presidential campaign of William Henry Harrison, in which hard cider became a central emblem of popular appeal. The prominent cobalt inscription suggests a likely connection to that campaign culture, reflecting the use of utilitarian stoneware as a medium for political expression.
 
Condition: Excellent, with minor chips to the underside of the base, not visible on display.
